Carers WA is a non-profit, community-based organisation and registered charity that is dedicated to improving the lives of the estimated 320,000 family carers in Western Australia. By working in partnership with carers, individuals with care and support needs, health professionals, service providers, government and the wider community, Carers WA has had an immeasurable impact on countless local lives.
Our team jumped at the opportunity to work on, and with such a meaningful organisation when we were approached by Carers WA years ago. Once it finally came time to deliver a project, Start Digital was tasked with a new website and a brand refresh that brought Carers WA’s digital presence into 2020.
Alongside the brand revamp and new website, Carers WA also wanted to migrate to a new content management system (CMS). We collectively agreed WordPress is the best CMS for their situation, primarily because the organisation wanted the ability to easily add and update content to the site moving forward. Once the live site environment was developed on WordPress, we went charging full steam ahead.
Our approach to the branding and website design was all about balance. Given the sensitivity of Carers WA’s mission, we needed to find the right balance between engaging, professionalism, respect and vibrancy. We drew a vast amount of visual inspiration from the logo which contains abstract shapes and features two vibrant colours that look great when expanded upon. By adding a soft background (#f2f4ec) across the site, we felt like each page remained credible while captivating due to the colour and fonts of the text. Further, the strategic selection of images played a crucial role in the branding of Carers, and the visual aesthetics of the site.
Something else that was very important to both parties, was the display of all of the relevant content throughout the internal pages in a manner that’s easily readable and simple to navigate through. Consequently, the introduction of service side-menus throughout each content silos on the site alongside the CTA buttons at the bottom of each main page. With an existing website, Carers WA provided our team with all the necessary text content (old and re-written) upfront and so it didn’t take long for the pages to be developed upon receiving internal page approval.
We created a new solution for on-site RSVP for their events, forums and workshops to top off the project. Within moments of getting access to the site, the Carers team began updating text, images and even plugins, seamlessly as they originally had hoped for. With a captivating design, greater ease of navigation and enhanced accessibility in a multitude of ways, this new Carers WA website ticks all of the boxes and we couldn’t be more proud of it!
Carers WA connects and supports individual and family carers of varying ethnicities, nationalities and needs. Given Carers WA clientele, accessibility was a critical part of the design and development of this new website. We integrated a language translator, enabling the site content to be translated into a 100 plus languages including Arabic, Chinese and Spanish. Further, we added tools to the site to enhance its accessibility so individuals can make changes including increasing and/or decreasing font sizes, highlighting fonts and changing the colours used on the site. With these two specific functions, Start Digital has helped Carers WA ensure their site offers every single carer the user experience they deserve.
Our aim with this website was to bring it all together, keep it simple and keep our user in mind. Not an easy feat for a user demographic of 8-80+. Working with Start Digital has been a dream these past 6 months. The team kept lines of communication open, kept us informed and checked back in with our original brief often to ensure the final product was exactly what we envisioned and then some. They deserve an extra pat on the back for launching the site on time even amidst the COVID-19 pandemic.
