5 best apps for photo creatives

As a web design and graphic design agency, we rely heavily on a range of digital tools that help us express ourselves creatively. From the heavy-hitting big boys such as Adobe Illustrator and Photoshop through to the new kids on the block like Sketch and Affinity, there are so many tools and apps for photo creatives that are available, it’s difficult to choose just what to use and how to use it!

Increasingly we’re turning to other devices to use apps that provide a more specific set of tools for creating new and exciting digital media. Whether we’re looking to create music, collage artwork, typography quotes or remixed photos, mobile and tablet devices have become a creative best friend. No longer limited to an office chair and desktop, we’re creating new stuff on the move, wherever we get the time!

At Start Digital we’re a Perth web design company that’s passionate about new technology and new ways we can express ourselves. We download and test new apps on an almost daily basis, looking for unique tools that will help us deliver a quality, cutting-edge web design and graphic design solution to our Perth clients. With this in mind, we thought it would be fun to list our five ‘go to’ applications that we constantly use. Without further ado here are the 5 best apps for photo creatives.

Here are the 5 best apps for photo creatives

Hipstamatic

5 best apps for photo creatives

Hipstamatic

An oldie but goodie. We were using Hipstamatic long before we discovered the filters on Instagram. The app has evolved in recent years but has managed to stick to what made it unique in the first place – having the ability to mix and match classic lenses, old style film, flashes and effects to create stunning filters that are unique and more realistic than anything we’ve seen on other filter based apps. It can get expensive to add the packs continually but they’re well worth the money.

Reflect

Reflect-App-Lake

Reflect

One of the visual effects apps from the folk at Brain Fever Media, Reflect gives you the ability to add water, ice, steel surfaces and sci fi grids to your images. By reflecting the main image into the added surface you can make a photo of you at the park look like you’re wading through a rainy lake. We’re not sure that there’s any commercial use for this type of thing but if you’re looking to add something different to your Instagram account then Reflect is a fun place to start. Check out Brain Fevers other apps as well – they’re all good!

Legend

Apps that add text to your photos are ten a penny now. Some are great (Wordswag), others tend to follow one another and look a little generic. Legends point of difference is that it adds animated text over the top of your photos and videos. Write something and Legend will give you a range of animation styles to choose from. We’re big fans of Legend here at Start Digital and have used it to give our pictures of Perth and Fremantle something different.

Hyperspektiv

Hyperspektiv

This one can give some seriously weird results but that’s why we love it. It’s sneaking under the radar right now so get on board. Effects such as Kaos, Bender, Geogaddi, Betamax and Tripsauce can create some spooky stuff. The effects can be controlled by dragging your fingers across the screen but they give some pretty random effects. If you’re looking for something completely different from the standard Instagram filters then this could be worth a try!

Prisma

The new kid on the block and the one with the most hype right now. Prisma is creating a new standard for what we expect from photo filters. By combining neural networks and artificial intelligence, Prisma remixes your photos to look like they were painted and crafted by master painters. The results are largely dependent on what you put in. Some images look incredible, some not so incredible. Still, it’s incredibly addictive and what’s more, it’s free. Download Prisma for iOS and Android now and keep an eye out for Prisma Video – that’s going to be interesting!

As the mobile app space continues to evolve and devices become more powerful we’re expecting design and creativity to become even more fluid. Can’t wait to see what’s to come!
